A self-launched 14-day run through the Himalaya: Bhutan's dzongs and the Tiger's Nest hike, Nepal's Kathmandu Valley, Chitwan's jungles and Pokhara's lakes, then across to Lhasa for the Potala Palace and Tibet's great monasteries. This is a DIY version of Himalayan Glacier's group tour — you book the same guesthouses and activities yourself, use local buses and domestic flights where sensible, and travel with a licensed Tibetan guide (mandatory for foreigners) and pre-arranged permits. Note: Bhutan's SDF (Sustainable Development Fee, ~£80/day) and Tibet's mandatory guided/permits system mean this particular route is one of the few where DIY savings are smaller than usual — but you still come out thousands of pounds ahead.
